In 1896, the City of Highlands was annexed from Denver and became known as “North Denver.” As the area started to grow, sub neighborhoods began to establish themselves, Jefferson Park being one of them.
In the 1960s, there was a mass exodus of families from the city to the suburbs. Jefferson Park wasn’t the only neighborhood to suffer from this abandonment, it was happening all over the nation. However, since the early 1990s, great efforts have been made to restore the community.
One such attempt in Jefferson Park was a large scale development plan for an amphitheater threatened that threatened to destroy the historic integrity of the neighborhood but the community fought back by forming JPUN (Jefferson Park United Neighborhood) and defeated the proposal. This got the attention of the community and residents began to turn their concern on the good of the neighborhood, proposing more ‘controlled’ development.
There are still many historic single family homes that dot the neighborhood along with the new Condo’s, Town Homes and apartment complexes. It’s proximity to Downtown and Highland makes this area a desirable neighborhood to live.
Today, the neighborhood is still in transition but considered up-and-coming.
